Private Investigators - Part II

By Michael Russell This article is a continuation of our multi part series about private investigators, picking up where we left off. Many private investigators decide to specialize in one type of investigation. The reason for this is because some cases involve so much knowledge in a required area that trying to concentrate on more than just that area of expertise becomes very difficult. Just like many doctors concentrate on one type of medicine, such as ear, nose and throat, or gynaecology, many detectives also specialize. Legal investigators specialize in cases that usually end up going to trial such as murder investigations. They’ll often assist in the preparation of legal defenses, locating witnesses, serving legal documents, interviewing police and possible witnesses, and also assist in gathering and reviewing evidence. Legal investigators also sometimes collect information concerning the parties involved in the litigation and may even testify in court. Corporate investigators perform the function of conducting internal and external investigations for large corporations. In the case of an internal investigation they may investigate drug use by an employee or even corporate theft by an employee or group of employees. Much of the Enron scandal evidence was acquired by private investigators. When conducting an external investigation for a corporation a detective may be involved in uncovering criminal schemes to try to steal the company’s private information on a new product. Financial investigators are usually hired to investigate another company that the corporation may be thinking about doing business with for a possible merger. These investigations are intended to uncover any shady dealings that the prospective company may have been involved with. Many of these investigators are also certified public accountants as this skill is needed to be able to perform this job adequately. Detectives who work for retail stores, hotels and other public places where theft is always possible, are mostly responsible for controlling losses, stopping theft and protecting assets. These store detectives are also known as loss prevention agents. They perform their job by apprehending anyone who is attempting to steal merchandise or destroy store property. They stop theft by shoplifters, vendor representatives, delivery personnel and even store employees. These detectives also perform periodic searches of stock areas, dressing rooms and rest rooms and will sometimes even assist in opening and closing the store itself. Part of their job requires them to fill out loss prevention and security forms and reports for the store owner and managers and also to testify in court against any persons that they themselves have apprehended in the act of a crime. In the case of hotel detectives they protect the hotel guests and their belongings against theft and also police the hotel bars and restaurants to prevent undesirables from causing trouble. Because of some of these duties, many of these investigators may have at one time been trained law enforcement officers, as the job can often get very ugly. In our next article in this series we’ll continue with the working conditions of private investigators. ——————————————————- Michael Russell Your Independent guide to Private Investigators ——————————————————- Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Michael_Russell http://EzineArticles.com/?Private-Investigators—Part-II&id=129061 unsecured personal loan lenders bad credit personal loans with home home owners loan with bad credit minority sba loan guarantees

All that Glitters-Something Old, Something New…

By M J Plaster Brides through the ages have accessorized with wedding jewelry to add a finishing touch to their bridal attire; however, many brides who don’t wear jewelry in everyday life jump at the chance to wear it on their wedding day. Is it the special occasion or the chance to play dress-up that prompts these brides to don the unthinkablejewelry? Those brides too practical to care about jewelry in real life use it on their wedding day to check off all the “somethings” that bring good lucksomething old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. Whatever your reason for wearing jewelry on your wedding day, it should complement the overall theme of the wedding, including the formality of the occasion, the design of the wedding dress, and the bridal color scheme if your jewelry includes color. The traditional bridal jewelry ensemble consists of pearl and/or diamond earrings and necklace, often heirloom pieces (something old, something borrowed). Pearls top the list as the most popular bridal jewelry. Originally worn as a symbol of purity, pearls are understated, elegant and timeless. If you listen closely and put your ear to the ground, you can almost hear that chorus of all the Mothers of the Brides from here to Timbuktu: “Dear, you cannot go wrong with pearls.” For once, Mother’s mantra hits the mark. The same holds true for diamonds. You can’t go wrong with real diamonds. A rare bride can afford to be gaudy and showy with diamonds, and those who can know better. It’s the blinding array of affordable simulated diamonds that leads to trouble. On your wedding day, less is always more unless you’re Elizabeth Taylor. There’s a fine line between a fairy tale look and gaudy. If you’re not sure whether you’re crossing the line, ask for help from a trusted friend or relative with an air of elegance. If you want to wear pearls and a little flash of diamonds, the “Sweetheart” Swarovski line combines the two (something new), and offers you a choice of colors in pendants and spacers, as well as your choice of metals. Swarovski crystals and glass pearls are the finest in quality from the Czech Republic, world renowned for their crystals and semi-precious gems. Each handmade piece is customized to match the colors in your wedding. Their line also includes glass fresh water pearls. If you want to introduce a little color into your wedding jewelry, pick up a color in the bridesmaids’ dresses (something blue). Guidelines for Bridal Jewelry Semi-formal or formal attire guidelines apply to wedding attirethe simpler the dress, the more elaborate the jewelry. You can’t highlight everything, and you don’t want your jewelry to compete with your gown. Intricate bridal gowns with elaborate beadwork or hand-sewn lace call for simple, elegant jewelry while unadorned bridal gowns can support jewelry with more glitter, glitz and drama. You may hear that a white bridal gown requires silver jewelry and that an ivory bridal gown requires gold jewelry. Unless you specifically selected your bridal gown to match your engagement and wedding rings, select gold or silver jewelry according to your personal preference. You’re going to find that almost everyone with whom you discuss your wedding plans has an opinion on nearly everything, usually stated as a rule. When you select your wedding jewelry, ask yourself the following questions: Does the jewelry fit the occasion? Is it too formal or too casual? Does the jewelry compete with your wedding dress? Does the necklace follow the curve of the neckline? For example, if your wedding gown has a round neckline, a choker follows the neckline. If your gown has a V-neck, a longer necklace follows the neckline. Does your jewelry accentuate your best features, or does it attract attention to the wrong area of your face or neckline? Earring Options Whether you choose studs, or dangling earrings, pearls or diamonds, the key words are delicate and elegant. If your bridal bouquet and floral displays are predominantly pastel, you can select one of the pastels for your jewelry ensemble. Pale pink pearls are stunning with a bouquet of pastel roses. Out with the rules: wear whatever makes you look and feel good. Neckwear Options High necklines are the only necklines that generally cannot support neckwear. The neckline is the neckwear! If you’re wearing a severe neckline such as a bateau, you can wear a more dramatic necklace: a larger, dramatic pendant or a longer strand of pearls. When in doubt, a simple pearl choker complements most necklines without overpowering the gown. Tiaras If you elect to wear a tiara, limit the rest of your jewelry to simple stud or button earrings and understated neckwear. You chose the tiara to make a statement; let it do just that. In fact, you may want to forego a necklace when wearing a tiara so that the eye wanders up to the tiara. When selecting your jewelry, determine which asset you want to emphasize, and use jewelry to draw attention to that asset. Jobs - The Most Dangerous Kind

By Michael Russell It’s no secret that there are many dangerous jobs out there in the world. Heck, some jobs that should be relatively safe, like working at a post office, result in people losing their lives. So while it is true, because of the world that we live in, that no job is totally safe, there are some jobs that are dangerous just by the nature of the job itself. We take a look at just a few of these, most of which will probably be very obvious to you. One of the most dangerous jobs in the world has to be that of a policeman. Not the ones that sit behind a desk, but the ones that are out on the street. With the prevalence of drugs and other substances in our society, every step that a policeman takes out on the streets is a potential step into mortal danger. What makes this all the more worse is that policeman are paid less money than professions that are no where near as dangerous and certainly no where near as important. This makes being a policeman not only dangerous, but thankless. This is something that you really have to want to do with all your heart. Another very dangerous job is that of a fireman. Every time that alarm goes off and a fireman has to respond to a fire, he is potentially walking into his death. Burning homes and warehouses don’t care who you are. They don’t care if you have a uniform on or not. Fire burns and kills everybody the same. In some ways, being a fireman is even more dangerous than being a policeman as each time you take a call you know there is a fire and a potentially dangerous situation. This is another job you have to want to do more than anything. If you’re looking for danger in your work, there is always the military. And it isn’t just going off to fight a war that makes it dangerous. A lot of the military training itself can be very dangerous as they need to prepare you for meeting with the enemy. Soldiers have been seriously hurt during training maneuvers. Men have died from excessively long hikes with full pack in the blazing sun. The commercial says, “Be all that you can be”. It should probably add a caveat to that saying. Something like “At your own risk”. But if you really want to live on the edge of extinction, just get yourself some training with explosives and find yourself a job on the bomb squad. In today’s world where terrorism is so prevalent, bomb scares are a way of life. And with each scare is the potential to find a real bomb. The job of the bomb squad is to disarm that bomb or to get blown up trying. No, this is not a high rush video game. This is real life, as dangerous as it gets. This is only the tip of the iceberg, Add to this FBI Agent, CIA Agent, Coal Miner, Construction Worker and anybody who works with heavy machinery and you’ve got enough danger to put a whole city in the hospital, or worse. 5 Unique Ways to Find Available Women on MySpace

By Scott Patterson Right now there are many guys who are meeting single and available women on MySpace. Unlike online dating websites, MySpace is completely free and doesn’t require a extensive completion of your profile. That’s why MySpace has become the #1 source for meeting interesting women. Now you might think contacting women on MySpace is relatively easy. All you have to do is create a profile and then start contacting women in your area. Then you can sit back and wait for women to contact you back. Unfortunately it’s not that easy! The major problem with MySpace is this site is saturated with lonely guys who try to taking the easiest path towards meeting women. What they do is contact every interesting girl on this site. As a result, almost every woman on this site is bombarded with messages from guys. As a result, most women on MySpace are tired of men pestering them. So what does this mean to you? Well my advice is to get serious about meeting women on MySpace. If you want to have ANY success, you have to develop a strategy that’ll make you stand apart from other guys. The most crucial part of this strategy is to find women on MySpace who are open to being contacted. In this article, I’ll discuss how you can find women on MySpace that WANT to talk to you. Each strategy will help you stand apart from the methods which other guys use and locate girls who are receptive to your emails. Tip #1- Contact New Women Similar to online dating sites, you’ll get the best results if you contact women who have recently joined MySpace. Because women receive tons of emails through MySpace, it’s important to contact the females who aren’t sick of the guys on this site. By contacting new member, you’ll have a higher success rate. This is especially true if you use a unique and interesting message. Tip #2- Contact available women On your MySpace profile, there is an option which allows you to browse for different types of women. One of the items includes a tool which narrows down your search to finding women who are looking for a certain type of person. The four options include friends, networking, dating or relationships. My advice is to try to contact girls who are actively looking for dating or relationships. Since they’ve stated they’re looking for dating or relationships, these women will be more open to being contacted. Tip #3- Contact certain women who are only looking for friends and networking As I mentioned before, a lot of women love MySpace but get tired of guys contacting them. So does that mean you’re not supposed to contact them? The answer is no! Even though a woman is only looking for friends or networking on this site, it doesn’t mean she’s not open to being contacted. Since these women have stated they only want friends, you have to approach them in a different way. First you should take a look at the profile of any girl you’re interested in. When taking a look here, you should find out if she’s in a relationship. Obviously when you see this, it’s an indication that she doesn’t want anything beyond friendship. So my advice is to only contact women who are single and looking for friends. Second when you contact a girl who is looking for friends or networking, you should do so in a friendly manner. Bring up something in her profile and try to spark a conversation. In other words, try being a friend at first and then seeing where things develop from there. Since you have a long time to transition from friends to something else, you should contact her in a non threatening manner and be friendly. Tip #4- Attend a MySpace party Another unique way to meet women through this site is to attend a MySpace party. While technically a MySpace party is different from the standard way to meet women on this site, attending one of these events is a great way to increase your social circle. On the MySpace site, there is a section which lists local events. Since many bars host “MySpace parties” there should be a listing in the events section with full details. By attending a MySpace party, you’ll be able to mingle with your MySpace friends and maybe meet new women. Tip #5- Contact friends of friends The final way to find women on MySpace is to take a look at the profiles of your friends. Just like in the “real world”, having a mutual friend is a great way to quickly build an intimate relationship with a woman. By contacting the women on your friends list, you at least have a common person you know. Just mention how you found her and then make a comment about her profile. If everything goes right, the two of you should make an instant connection. Trying to find the right type of women on MySpace can be a difficult challenge. Since women have hundreds of guys contacting them through this site, you’ll discover that it’s important to stand out from the crown and know what you’re doing. If you pay attention to the techniques I described in this article, you’ll find it’s easy to contact and meet attractive MySpace women in your area. It Pays to Understand About Medical Billing

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jeffrey_Meier] Jeffrey Meier Medical Billing is the process of submitting claims to insurance companies to receive payment by a doctor or health care provider for the services rendered by him to a patient. When the patient comes to the health care provider, he first examines the condition of his patient and then makes a medical record depending on the examination. The medical report will contain a summary of treatment given to the patient and demographic information related to him. The Process: Medical Billing will take place after an interaction between the heath care provider and the insurance company. To determine the procedure code the treatment given, the diagnosis and the duration of the treatment will be combined and then used to bill the insurance company. The provider can do this with the help of a billing specialist or a medical coder after which a billing record will be generated. This claim is then passed either directly to the insurance company or to a clearing house which plays the role of an intermediary. After this the procedure for medical billing will begin with the insurance company first checking if the claim is valid or not. They do this by checking the patient eligibility for payment, credentials of the health care provider and medical necessity. Once this test is passed the provider will get his claim but if the claim fails the test the claim gets rejected. The provider will be notified immediately. The good thing about medical billing is that even after getting rejected, the provider can resubmit the claim by reconciling with the original claim and making necessary corrections. Until the provider gets his claim this exchange of claims and messages may repeat multiple times. It has been recorded that the frequency of rejection is almost 50%. Before all medical billing used to take place on paper but thanks to computers now this can be managed efficiently no matter how large the amounts of claims are. Even medical billing softwares are available in the market. The Amount Paid: The insurance never pays the full amount claimed by the provider. Depending on the amount negotiated by the company and the provider, the original claim gets reduced. This gets further reduced if the patient has a deductible, copay or a coinsurance. A coinsurance means the patient has to pay certain percentage of the amount. If a patient has copay then the doctor will be paid the negotiated amount minus the copay amount. If the patient has a deductible say $200 then he would have to pay this amount in installments until the deductible is met at which point the insurance would begin to cover a portion of the charge. When choosing a billing center first find out about their reputation. Past experience always counts. It is not necessary that it should be a big billing company even small companies can offer the best service that you want. You just have to look for them and moreover they can offer your practice a more personalized service! Ever Wondered About The Kingdom?

By Mellody Davis We all have wondered from time to time, what exactly is the kingdom? The NIV version of the Bible explains the Kingdom of God as Gods rule on earth. Both present and still future. Began with the arrival of Christ and will be consummated when Christ comes back to earth for the second time. Now lets see what the Bible says about the Kingdom, who shall enter, and what one can do to enter it. First we must understand God made everything in the earth and the earth itself. Look at Genesis 1:1 it says In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. Look at verse 9 it says And God said, Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear. And it was so. God called the dry ground land, and the gathered waters he called seas. And God saw that it was good. Now look at Exodus 19:5 it says Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites. Look at Matthew 13:24 it says Jesus told them another parable: The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared. The owners servants came to him and said, Sir didnt you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from? An enemy did this, he replied. The servants asked him, Do you want us to go and pull them up? No, he answered, because while you are pulling the weeds, you may root up the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; them gather the wheat and bring it into my barn. Now look at Matthew 16:19 it says I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loose in heaven. Look at John 20:21 it says Again Jesus said, Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you. And with that he breathed on them and said, Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven. Now look at Revelation 3:7 it says To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. What he opens on one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. I will make those who are of the synagogue of Satan, who claim to be Jews though they are not, but are liarsI will make them come and fall down at your feet and acknowledge that I have loved you. Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come upon the whole world to test those who live on the earth. Look at Matthew 25:34 it says Then the King will say to those on his right, Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. Look at Mark 10:13 it says People were bringing little children to Jesus to have him touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Now look at Luke 16:19 it says There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury everyday. At his gate was laid a beggar name Lazarus, covered with sores and longing to eat what fell from the rich mans table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham s side. The rich man also died and was buried. In hell, where he was torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. So he called to him, Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire. But Abraham replied, Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm (pit) has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us. Look at John 3:5 it says Jesus answered, I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, You must be born again. Now look at John 3:10 it says You are Israels teacher, said Jesus, and do you not understand these things? I tell you the truth, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heavenSon of Man. Look at Proverbs 30:4 it says Who has gone up to heaven and come down? Look at John 6:38 it says For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Fathers will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. Now look at Acts 2:34 it says For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said, The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet. Therefore let all Israel be assured of this; God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ. Look at Ephesians 4:7 it says But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it. This is why it says; When he ascended on high, he led captives in his train and gave gifts to men. (What does he ascended mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions? He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.) It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare Gods people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Look at John 18:36 it says Jesus said, My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from another place. In closing look at Revelation 11:15 it says The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, which said: The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign for ever and ever. And the twenty-four elders, who were seated on their thrones before God, fell on their faces and worshiped God, saying: We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, the One who is and who was, because you have taken your great power and have begun to reign. The nations were angry, and your wrath has come. The time has come for judging the dead, and for rewarding your servants the prophets and your saints and those who reverence your name, both small and greatand for destroying those who destroy the earth. Tips For Healthcare Savings - What Every Person Should Know

By Chris Robertson Are you interested in saving on your health care needs? Do you occasionally need a prescription drug, only to have to do without because you can’t afford it? How many times, just this year alone, have you looked at your smile wishing you could go to the dentist? Not only can you save on these needs, but you can also save on vision and hearing needs as well. With the healthcare savings tips below, you can take care of yourself and family members without going broke. Save at the Pharmacy There are several ways to save money at the pharmacy. If you own a business, both over-the-counter and prescription medications are tax deductible. When you file taxes, you can use medical bills as leverage to save on your tax bill. This adds up quickly when buying expensive prescription drugs. There are also special discount cards designed specifically to save you dollars at the pharmacy. With these cards, you can get antibiotics prescribed by a physician at discounted rates and short-term medications such as painkillers, which you shouldn’t have to do without when you need them. Also with many discount prescription drug cards and pharmacy plans, you can visit almost any major pharmacy chain. Another way to save on prescription drugs is to always ask for a “generic” brand. Generic brands can be substituted for name brand prescription drugs if the physician permits it. Generic drugs are often less expensive but have the same healing properties. There are also herbal remedies that can sometimes be substituted for prescription medications. Check with your doctor and pharmacist to see if this is a possible solution. Saving at the Dentist You can also realize savings on your annual dental cleaning as well as root canals. Getting a crown can really make you dig deep into your purse. Luckily there are health savings plans that can help you with these and other orthodontia needs so your beautiful smile can be a reality instead of just a wish. Just as medical doctor bills and prescription drugs, dental bills are also tax deductible if you own a business. There are also independent dental insurance plans you can purchase if your current insurance company does not offer a dental plan. You can use the Internet to research plans that are available in your state. Though these plans often have a very limited maximum payout per year, they can be helpful in saving on individual dentist bills if you go regularly. Savings on Vision Care Does a saving of up to 60% on vision care interest you? It should, knowing that a pair of eyeglasses just five years ago was well over $350! Not to mention the average eye exam at around $75. Yes, vision care can get quite expensive these days. You don’t have to put off going to the eye doctor any longer just because you can’t afford it. Most people do put it off for that very reason. Healthcare savings plans and discount cards are also available for vision care. And yes, this too is tax deductible for business owners. Another way to realize savings on eyeglasses is to keep your same frames when getting a new prescription. The new lens can be placed in your old frames so you won’t have to pay for new frames. With these savings, you don’t have to feel guilty for taking care of your much-needed eyesight any longer. Savings on Hearing Care That old saying, “Nothing lasts forever” can be so true. It seems that the hearing is usually one of the first senses to start fading. You shouldn’t have to be embarrassed when the time comes that a hearing aid is needed to boost your hearing. It’s all a part of life. Whether you are more interested in ordering products through the mail or visiting a local hearing aid center near you, there are healthcare savings plans to help you save money on hearing products and exams. Use these tips to realize tremendous savings on your health needs and live your life without worry of outrageous medical expenses! Increase Your Success When Transplanting Seedlings

By Julie Williams Transplanting seedlings is one of my favourite tasks in the garden. There are a few simple things to consider to give your young plants the best chance to flourish you want them to thrive, rather than just survive. Timing Think about the time of year. Just because certain seedlings are available at your nursery, dont assume its the right time to plant them out. If youre not sure, read the label most tell you the best time of year to plant. You could look in gardening books, research online or ask family or friends who are gardeners (they might even give you some seedlings if theyve bought too many). You can plant tender plants before the risk of late frosts has passed, provided you listen closely to weather forecasts and are prepared to cover your babies with protection or enclose them in a cloche. Hardening Off If youve grown your seedlings from seed you probably know to harden them off before planting. But if youre buying them from a nursery take a look at where theyve been living. Have they been in a glass-house, under shade or exposed to the weather? If you seedlings have been grown outside exposed to the weather, they wont need hardening off. But if theyve been pampered, theyll need a bit of toughening up to prepare them for the real world. To harden off your seedlings you need to leave them outdoors for a longer time each day. Protect them under a porch or behind shade-cloth, bringing them indoors at night for the first few days. After a couple of days, you can expose them to the morning sun. At the end of a week, they’ll be tough enough to transplant to their permanent plot. Planting Out The garden bed they are being planted in should already have been prepared with layers of organic matter, compost and mulch. Water seedlings 10-15 minutes before planting out. Before removing seedlings from their containers, arrange them where they will be planted. When youre happy with the arrangement, use a trowel to dig a hole about twice the size of the rootball. Doing this prep work reduces the length of time that the roots will be exposed (drying out). Fill each hole with water. This supplies moisture to the plants root zone rather than the surface where it may quickly evaporate. Gently ease the first plant from its container, working from the bottom and sides to loosen it. Dont try and pull it from the container by its stem you may damage it. Only handle these young plants by their individual leaves or by the root ball. Keeping the rootball intact will help prevent transplant stress, but gently tease the roots to loosen them. Place the plant into the ground at about the same level that it was growing in its container. Backfill the hole until it is almost level with the soil. I like to add some organic fertilizer at this stage, to give my babies a head start. Just use a small amount you can add more later. Finish backfilling, pressing the soil lightly around the roots to ensure good soil-to-root contact. Water them in well, avoiding overhead watering, immediately after transplanting. Water daily for about a week until seedlings are well established. Bring mulch around the plant, leaving about a 10cm (4inch) diameter clear around each plant. Other things to consider Avoid transplanting vegetable seedlings when the weather is expected to be excessively hot. If you can, choose a day that is cloudy or transplant late in the afternoon or evening so that your plants can recover through the cool of the night, without sunlight beating down on them. If you cant do this its a good idea to provide some temporary shade, particularly in hot weather. An initial watering with an organic seaweed fertilizer will provide a wide range of nutrients and help reduce stress on your young seedlings. Get all your equipment ready before you start hand trowel, gardening gloves, kneeling pad, your water bottle and hat. Tomatoes are an exception to the rule as far as planting depth goes. You can plant them right down to the first set of true leaves. They will grow new roots right up to the soil level, making them more sturdy. Seedlings from the Cucumber family (cucumbers, squash, pumpkins, melons) do better planted in hills. This allows for better drainage and warms their soil to give them a better start. Hi, I am an avid organic gardener and am known by my friends as the recycling queen. I live on a small country property in South Australia. It is my mission to encourage as many people as possible to start organic gardening. This will improve both our individual lives and the wellbeing of our personal and global environments. Research the Old-Fashioned Way: Why the Library is Not Obsolete

By Kelly Garbato Although researching and writing a college paper has never been childs play, it was a bit more straightforward and less complicated before the advent of the Internet. Aspiring student researchers simply visited their universitys library, where they could easily check out a few relevant books after consulting the card catalog and use a periodical index to find a journal article or two. Nowadays, there are many more choices in addition to those regular, old-fashioned standbys. Still, the Internet has yet to render the library obsolete! The World Wide Web has become a boundless source of information, bringing knowledge to the homes of millions. Yet, despite the tens of billions of pages available online, it’s a mistake to conclude that everything is available (somewhere!) on the Web. Contrary to popular belief, the entire world’s wisdom is not online and free for the taking. Some information will cost you, while other resources are nowhere to be found. Additionally, the Web is rife with misinformation. Unfortunately, many students not only turn first to the Internet for their research needs, but they are also handicapped by their inability to distinguish reputable resources from unreliable ones. While use of the Internet can make research more convenient, it may also result in carelessness. Students are better served by beginning their research at the library and using the Web as a secondary resource. Fortunately, the Internet has also changed the way in which the supposedly pass library functions. While you may still see drawers upon drawers of card catalogs, most libraries have also made their catalogs available online. Computers have facilitated interlibrary loan (ILL) as well. Likewise, paper journals and microfiche persist, but these resources are supplemented with subscriptions to online academic databases. Ultimately, libraries have used the Internet to provide the best of both worlds - the reputable resources available at the library, digitalized for greater accessibility. 1. Online Catalogs In all likelihood, you’ve probably already used a card catalog, even if it was way back in elementary school. While catalogs do still exist, the good news is that most of them have been digitalized. Now available online, they’re much easier to access and search. If you can connect to your library’s computer system remotely, you can even browse their holdings from your dorm room! Online catalogs generally consist of records of the library’s holdings (books, journals, dissertations, manuscripts, etc.), as opposed to the holdings themselves. A record can include any of the following information: author, title, publisher, date and place of publication, journal title, subject, and keywords. You might be tempted to dismiss catalogs since they don’t provide instant gratification - immediate, full-text access to all available resources. However, you can access many of the holdings either via online academic databases or in the library itself - all it takes is a little detective work! Other libraries offer access to their catalogs as well. WebCATS (http://www.libdex.com/) is an index of over 18,000 libraries’ catalogs. You can browse them by geographical location or search the index by keyword. Each entry provides a direct link to the library’s online holdings. 2. Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Some libraries partner up with others and form groups called consortia. These consortia provide access to one another’s holdings - this is where ILL comes in. When you search your library’s catalog, most likely you’re simultaneously searching the catalogs of your library’s consortia as well. These libraries include not only university libraries, but also public, school, government, corporate, and institutional libraries. If you find a resource that isn’t available at your “home” library, you can either borrow it or obtain a copy from the library that houses it. Many libraries offer this service online, but if you have any questions or are unable to locate an online form, it can be done at your library’s reference desk as well. If you aren’t affiliated with a library (or if you need a resource that belongs to a library that your own library isn’t associated with), you might be able to borrow or order it for a fee. 3. Academic Databases Academic databases are privately owned or proprietary databases that charge users a fee to search their holdings or retrieve full-text documents. While members of the public can pay to use these services online, students have ready access to dozens of proprietary databases that their libraries subscribe to. These academic databases can cover a wide range of subjects, from business to the humanities, and offer everything from citations and abstracts to full-text documents. A single company may produce several different databases, and different databases may include some of the same materials (including journals, articles, or even smaller or more specific databases). Before you can choose the right database, you need to have a general idea of what subject you’ll be researching. Then, browse your library’s site for a database that covers your desired topic. Most likely, you’ll have several promising databases from which to select. Don’t be discouraged, and don’t rely on just one - try them all out! Although some of their coverage may overlap, you’ll probably be able to find unique resources in each of them. While students veer towards databases, especially those that provide instant access to full-text articles, this is a grave mistake. As expansive as they may be, academic databases don’t usually include books, dissertations, or multimedia materials. Their coverage generally only dates back to the 1970s, and they don’t provide exhaustive coverage of most disciplines. Even worse, the full-text articles sometimes contain mistakes, including typographical errors and omissions of sections of the article - or even the entire article itself! Ideally, you should supplement your use of full-text databases with databases that only provide citations or abstracts. Then, you can use your library’s online catalog to locate hard copies of the materials. If the sources you’re interested in aren’t available at your library, it’s very possible that you’re librarian will be able to help you track them down. The next time you need to do some research, make the first stop your library as opposed to your laptop! Far from being supplanted by the Digital Age, libraries have integrated new technologies into their services, making them more useful than ever.
