World Bank Staff Volunteering

By Emmanuel Ayomide Praise Staff Volunteering: Bank staff provided more than 10,000 hours of community service to charities in the Washington metropolitan area in FY06. The Dollars for Doers Program complements the Banks local grantmaking efforts by encouraging Bank staff to volunteer and serve on the boards of directors of local nonprofits. Bank staff are allowed to take time to volunteer in the community, and their efforts are complemented by $500 grants to nonprofits through Dollars for Doers. The Program works closely with Bank departments to organize community service projects and integrate team-building activities with these projects, such as Rebuilding Togethers National Rebuilding Day on the last Saturday of April. In-kind Donations: The Community Outreach Program recycles office furniture, office supplies, and computer equipment by donating these items to charity. The total value of donated goods and services in FY06 was more than $100,000. Thus far in FY07, the Program has donated more than 100 pieces of furniture and an extensive amount of office supplies to charities in the Washington area and overseas. East of the River Initiative : In 2006, the Community Outreach Program launched a new three-year, $750,000 capacity building program known as the East of the River Initiative. Working in partnership with the Nonprofit Roundtable of Greater Washington, the Urban Institute and Fair Chance, the Initiative aims at building the capacity of nonprofit organizations working in the education and youth sectors east of the Anacostia River in Wards 6, 7 and 8 in Washington. Specifically, it will help these nonprofits to better identify, measure and communicate the effectiveness of their work in the community. Student Internships: The High School Internship Program provides local high school students from low-income communities with the opportunity to learn job skills. During the summer of 2006, 21 students from several Washington public schools worked as interns in units throughout the Bank. The interns are paid a salary and are also provided paid training one day a week. The program has also included homeless students for whom this experience has often proven to be an important self-affirming opportunity. The Program was recently expanded to include yearlong internships for several students. Annual Giving Campaign: The World Bank Community Connections Fund is an independent nonprofit organization set up by the Bank to encourage staff to make charitable donations via payroll deductions, which will in turn leverage Bank corporate matching funds. It supports an annual giving campaign benefiting 214 locally based charities such as Bethany House, DC Central Kitchen, Habitat for Humanity Washington DC, Doctors without Borders USA, Latin American Youth Center, and Whitman-Walker Clinic. The FY07 Community Connections Campaign was an unprecedented success, with Bank staff donating over $890,000 through individual contributions and special events fund-raising. The Bank provided a 50% corporate match of over $445,000, bringing the total that the Bank will give back to the community this year to over $1.3 million. Disaster Relief : Bank staff spontaneously mobilize to respond to natural disasters around the world, primarily by setting up donation tables in Bank lobbies and cafeterias. During 2006, for example, funds were raised for victims of the floods in Ethiopia. Funds raised through these donation drives are provided to international nongovernmental organizations directly involved in disaster relief operations, such as the American Red Cross. These funds are managed through the World Bank Community Connections Fund. Highlights In FY06, Community Outreach grants totaled $960,000. Bank staff typically donate more than 10,000 hours of community service per year. The Community Connections Campaign raised over $1.3 million in FY07. The total value of donated goods and services in FY06 was more than $100,000. The Bank, together with local partners, has launched a three-year, $750,000 East of the River Initiative focused on capacity building for nonprofits working in the education and youth sectors in Wards 6, 7, and 8. Get A Low Cost Secured Loan Hassle Free

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Peter_Taylor]Peter Taylor Among many things what many of the general public is also looking out for these days are the loans, especially ones which do not tax them that much. Many other people think that is a combination that one would do well to achieve. However, it is possible to achieve with low rate secured loans. Low rate secured loan is a loan which helps people who cannot afford to go in loans which are provably more lucrative but carry a higher rate of interest. As is the case anywhere of the world most of the population is formed from the middle class level so they generally prefer the low rate loans. So if that is the question, a low rate secured loan would be the perfect answer to many a people. A low rate secured loan is a loan which is offered by the creditors to the borrowers at an interest rate which is usually lower than other interest rates. However there is a condition that has to be followed, that being the loan is a secured loan and a security has to be pledged to the creditor in order to take the loan. A security can be any thing like a car any business asset or may be the home in which the borrowers are putting up or owning. This is because as now the creditor is now sure that his money is in safe hands and he can lend you money at the terms which the borrowers desire. One disappointing aspect of the low rate secured loan is that people who do not have any security to offer cannot avail the features offered by the loan as this is one of the primary requirements of the loan. However, on the flip side the benefits of the low rate secured loans are a plenty as well. Benefits like: Low rate of interest brings about low monthly installments, which are easier to get rid off than the big monthly payments. With a secured loan the option is with the borrower to choose the time frame of the loan. The similar criteria can be applied to the amount of loan that can be chosen. People with bad credit history can also go for a low rate secured loan and can achieve what they want to achieve. Apart from these general benefits there are other benefits which may be dependent upon the circumstances at that point of time. People generally feel that the borrowers exploit the borrowers who need the loans for their purposes. Well! The things have changed and the borrowers should have no reason to complain with the low rate secured loan. The Blue Matrix and Body Wisdom

By Mary Desaulniers Artist as HealerHealer as Artist, Sharlene McLearon creates work that images art as a healing force for herself, others and the Earth. Her paintings are expressive and symbolic. Most are images that emerged from a healing dimension and in their own profound way, will lead viewers to be healed as well. Her paintings speak in unspoken words and open up the heart and mind of the viewer to limitless possibilities. There is more than aesthetic talent in Sharlenes art; there is powerspiritual power. Sharlene has studied art in Canada and abroad– in Paris, Florence and Chautauqua, N.Y. She was a Docent at the National Gallery of Canada in the 80s. She had solo and group exhibitions in Saudi Arabia, Canada and Germany. The National Museum for Women in the Arts in Washington D.C. recognized her artistic accomplishments in 1993 and opened a file for her work in their Archives. Her art work can be found in private and corporate collections in over 35 countries. UNICEF, Geneva, selected her painting Sunflowers in 1997 and used that image in cards to raise funds in Europe and Asia. Her art can be viewed at her gallery website. What is most amazing about Sharlene is that she is also a Registered Nurse, a journalist who interviewed frontline Saudi and Egyptian troops during the Gulf crisis, naval officers on a warship in the Persian Gulf and doctors who escaped the occupation of Kuwait. As well, she had been a television journalist who scripted, filmed and hosted documentaries for Saudi Arabian TV. In her spare time, she wrote poetry that has been published in Saudi Arabia and England. And this is not all about Sharlene. Safely ensconced in London Ontario since 2000, she has literally re-invented herself as a Certified Reiki Master/Teacher, a Master Instructor of Integrated Energy Therapy and the first Blue Matrix Energetics Instructor in Ontario. And it is this latter capacity that points to the common thread that runs through all her incarnationsa powerful connection to the Universal Energy Source that comes from her innate understanding of the wisdom of the body. Blue Matrix Energetics is an energy-based system of healing that involves the laying on of hands to channel powerful, universal life force energy of varying frequencies, says Sharlene. Imagine these frequencies as a stairway of frequency dimensions leading to the Zero-Point Field. We work in the frequency of Ultraviolet Blue for genetic restructuring and physical healing. Then through this stairway of ascending frequency dimensions, we move the client into higher states of consciousness that can be life-changing for him or her. During this process, we can bring about neurological reprogramming of harmful attitudes and remote viewing of the timelines in the clients own life journey. The result is a healing and re-balancing of body, mind and emotions which allows the client to come to a deeper understanding of himself or herself. The treatments themselves are a source of spiritual experience for Sharlene as well. During the treatments, she says, I have amazing visions of Divine Intelligence working on the client to heal, using technology never seen before. The Blue Matrix moves through the body of the client showing me where there is a problem and I see them working on it to heal the area. Many times I see the body rise to the earths grid and get plugged in, so to speak, for healing purposes. During the final hand position and at the highest frequency I often experience the presence of the Divine. I feel so privileged to be doing this work. How did Sharlene get involved with Blue Matrix? She was introduced to this healing therapy by its founder, Barbra Hudson of British Columbia, at an annual meeting of the Canadian Reiki Association in Toronto. Sharlenes sense of humility and respect for Universal Energy is evident in the way she sees herself as a vehicle or channel for the power of the field. However, she insists that we can all be channels. Ultimately, the power is in our hands and she would be more than happy to teach us how to claim that power as our own. Like her paintings, working with Blue Matrix Energetics allows Sharlene to tap into a spiritual canvas that creates healing in all dimensions. Copyright 2006 Mary Desaulniers Mary Desaulniers Ph.D will be interviewing Sharlene Mclearon on VoiceAmerica 7th Wave Network Internet Radio show “Reclaiming The Body’s Wisdom” beginning October 5/06 . Summer Photo Taking Tips

By Vera Raposo “We’re having a heat wave, a tropical heat wave.” No doubt you are one of many in our nation trying to get through a long hot summer. Well, take heart! There is one activity which will not only give you pleasure, but memories to last a lifetime. It’s time to take out your new scrapbook, dust it off, and add new pages of photos to it. Use a photo tip in the next section to make sure you are capturing the best summer pictures ever. Summer yields a myriad of opportunities. Photograph your favorite flower, plant or tree. If you enjoy the beach or pool, flash the splash! Take different shots of children at play using color and/or black and white. Dare to be different! If you enjoy early morning walks, take your camera with you. Whether you walk around Central Park or simply around your own block, nature has a way of revealing the minutest detail of summer to you. Capture it! Here are some photo tips: Use a digital camera so that you can edit your photos on line. If a digital camera is not available to you, use a standard camera and have plenty of film and batteries on hand according to the camera’s specifications. Keep an account of where you took the photos so that you will be able to label them in your scrapbook. When taking pictures outdoors, stay away from direct sunlight as it will result in shadowed photos. Overcast days are ideal for picture-taking. Experiment with close-ups, i.e., zoom in - zoom out. Use light and dark to give your photos perspective. Indoor picture-taking also allows you to experiment with light and darkflash on - flash off. When traveling to any local or foreign destination include scenic photos of waterfalls, the local streets, people, rock formations, beaches, towns, historic landmarks, etc. When taking a picture of a friend or loved one in front of an historic setting, stand as far back as possible so that the entire backdrop is captured. Take a picture of a sunset. The colors derived from it can never be duplicated. Be creative! Photography is quite subjective. Only you know what appeals to you. Enjoy the experience. Now that your photos are ready for the scrapbook, begin to improvise on how you wish it to look. Use pastels or textured paper for summer photos. There are many scrapbook sites online that give you excellent ideas on how to set up, maintain, and enjoy the process. Memories last a lifetime. Ensure that your photos last as well. Remember, the world consists of objects and colors with which you can begin to compose the painting in your mind’s eye. Vera Raposo has been scrapbooking since her oldest child was 5. With tons of scrapbooking tips and ideas, Vera is now sharing some of her best scrapbooking ideas on her radio show at http://www.scrapperstalkradio.com. Bextra and Vioxx — Alternative Medications Have Warnings, Too

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Charles_Essmeier] Charles Essmeier At the urging of the Food and Drug Administration, the drugs Vioxx and Bextra have both been voluntarily withdrawn from the market by their manufacturers. Studies show that these drugs, part of a family of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) known as COX-2 inhibitors, may be linked to increased chances of heart attack or stroke. Since these two drugs were heavily prescribed for treatment of arthritis pain and inflammation, many users have suddenly found themselves without their prescription medication and without relief. The automatic response to this might be to reach for a traditional anti-inflammatory, such as ibuprofen or naproxen. Alternatively, patients may opt to take the lone remaining prescription drug in the COX-2 family of NSAIDs, Celebrex. Before reaching for that over-the-counter pain reliever, patients would be well-advised to do some further research, or, on newer bottles, read the label. While the majority of the news reports regarding NSAIDs have covered Bextra and Vioxx, the FDA warnings include all NSAIDs, including the over-the-counter varieties, which include naproxen and ibuprofen. These drugs are now required to have a black box warning on the bottle, which outlines the fact that patients taking these medications may be at increased risk of having a heart attack or stroke. Many physicians in the medical profession are quick to point out that the warnings come as a result of a rather limited study, and that further studies are necessary to fully determine the degree of risk that one assumes when taking these medications. Such studies will be done, but in the meantime, the warnings on the label should not be taken lightly. Patients should be aware that taking such medications either in large doses or over prolonged periods of time could pose certain risks. As always, patients who have questions regarding these or any medications should consult with their physician. Copyright 2005 by Retro Marketing. 4 Ways To Create A Professional And Successful Trade Show Booth On A Small Budget

By David Branson Today’s cut throat competition in marketing consumer products and services make it inevitable to use all available sources to gain visibility and increase the client base. Taking part in trade shows is an effective way to achieve this. Though it is an effective way, it is also an expensive way to promote one’s services or products. Expenses for a trade show queue up in a variety of ways such as cost of the raw space, promotional material, trade show booths or displays, temporary stall assistant if it takes place in a different city or country, transportation and travel expenses, and so on. Among these, one of the elements that contribute a great deal towards these expenses is the trade show booth or display. Not all businesses can afford expensive stalls, in such situations one is forced to play within a given limited budget yet remain catchy and professional. There are many ways to create a professional and successful trade show booth on a small budget. 1. Plan ahead - If you prepare for your show at the eleventh hour then you will be forced to spend more on your booth. Preparing at the last moment gives you very little time or no time to juggle between various options on the creation of your booth, in terms of both cost and the booth design. Maybe if you had enough time to shop around, then you would have come across a cheaper deal and you would not be forced to buy the first booth display that you see. If you plan ahead maybe you could visit discount sales that take place during various times of the year and have the material ready for your tradeshow. 2. Keep your booth simple and uncluttered. Do not have too many design elements, but leave enough room for the visitors to move around. This would make your booth look spacious and at the same time will cut down the unnecessary expenses on the design elements that clutter the stall. Use bright colors in your booth that will stand out. 3. Until you participate in a number of shows, avoid creating your own displays. Many think that creating their own display will cut down the cost. Most often, the contrary proves to be true. You would always go out of your budget as you progress with the design with no guarantee on the quality of the final design output. You would rather be well off to use experts in this field while you concentrated on the other promotional activities. 4. A physical visit to the booth in advance is always useful to create a cost effective design rather than just looking at the dimensions of your stall in writing. Many stalls are mentally designed in virtual space and when they go to the real spot, they realize that the design or the layout they had in mind will not workout, leading to double expense. When you visit your stall, you will be able to decide whether a rollup display will be suitable or a tabletop display unit would be ideal. Rollup banners and tabletop display units are often cheap and they can be reused for your future shows too. Should You Commoditize Your Worth in a Relationship?

By Brooke Brimm We live in a capitalist society, and in this kind of society everything is viewed as a commodity. We view our wallet size, our body size, our house size, our education level, and our level of attractiveness as commodities within relationships. Many times in relationships we base our worth and the worth of our mates on capitalist principles. We may say or think I know I couldnt get a man that is attractive because I am not attractive or I can get any mate I want because I look damn good. Now, I am not nave enough to believe that things like beauty, prestige, and wealth have not played a part in keeping long lasting relationships together. However, if we make the mistake of confusing superficial attributes with substance we may pay a huge price. I am not just referring to the lost dollars, the lost property, and/or the loss of time with children that two superficial people may experience when they have to part. The bigger price tag comes from the damage to your spirit and your soul. One consequence of viewing ourselves as commodities can be distrusting another who loves us just the way we are because we do not think we measure up to societys standard of beauty or wealth. Another is missing out on love from someone who we think doesnt have the right commodities. Countless times I have heard women and men talk about bringing something to the table” when referring to relationships. Since when did love become a business? I do understand that when a man and women join in marriage they have the opportunity to build a life together and a byproduct of that is financial gain. However, in my opinion, when they join it should always be about a mutual love and respect they have for each other. Otherwise, the union will be headed to a sure demise. When my husband and I met, we were both very broke, one of us was in school, one was not. We both had questionable credit, and neither of us had a car. I was young, very shapely, and very attractive. Prior to meeting him I had used what some might call my assets to date men that had more money than I. However, when I met him I knew immediately that he was a man of substance and value, and I fell in love. Once we married we worked together to build things like credit, and businesses. We both know that if those things go away, our love won’t crumble because our relationship wasnt built on those things. If we strive to be the best we can be internally and externally, then we can have faith that we will attract someone of similar substance. We do not have to limit ourselves to what society dictates to us. Love is about compatibility, trust and respect. We can love anyone we want, once we release the chains society places on us. Brooke Brimm has a Master’s degree in Professional Counseling and 8 years of experience in the field of Human Science. She has been married since 1993 and has two beautiful daughters. Ms. Brimm authors an ezine, Loves Gumbo, in which she discusses love, relationships, and friendships in today’s society.
